This morning, driving to work, I listened to Steve Inskeep explain, in his measured broadcaster voice, that in the world of biology, extinction is forever, that once an animal is declared extinct, no one expects to see it again.
'Yep,' I thought. 'Just like the ivory-billed woodpecker.'
And then, as the deities are my witnesses, I heard the following story:
